Charitable Questions ©

For nearly 30 years I’ve been working with those who give and those who receive money in the non-profit world. I sincerely believe that if donors would ask six or eight simple questions, they would be more satisfied with their giving and receivers would be more satisfied that they were moving forward towards their goals.

I call these, “Charitable Questions ©”:

1. What do you want the completion of your giving to look like? Everyone wants to improve the world with their giving but few think about the end game; what IS it that I want to eventually accomplish?

Actual question: Is the receiver of my funds thinking that I am going to give them money as long as I live?

2. Do I want to be involved in the project? Many who give actually want to have a say in how their funds are spent or at least participate in the process.

Actual question: Do I want to be part of the fun on the ground or do I want the receiver to have free rein on determining how the money I give is spent?

These and additional questions are part of a body of research that we at Give Way Visioneering are developing. As you can see, each of the questions above bid more questions. We are working to refine the questions so that donors can spend less than an hour asking smart questions before diving into giving towards a project.
